A publication sympathetic to the work of artist Susan Shantz offers insight into her thought processes and working practices. Central themes in her work include tenderness, nurturing, vulnerability, technology, and medical intervention during childbirth. These themes inspired the catalogue’s aesthetic.
Conceptually and visually, a sterile, clinical structure was developed using pharmaceutical packaging as inspiration. This was wrapped in a dust jacket resembling a soft, fleshy pink child’s sticker sheet. The jacket featured the artist’s drawings, transformed into repositionable self-adhesive stickers using a ‘kiss cut’ die. These stickers could be inserted into the catalogue’s designated spaces. The handmade elements make this a unique and memorable object full of interactive possibilities.
